What is an enhanced DBS check?
A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is a criminal record check. For taxi and private hire driver licensing, councils normally require an enhanced DBS check, which includes spent and unspent convictions, cautions, warnings and any relevant information held by local police.
Why taxi drivers need one
Because drivers carry members of the public, often alone and sometimes vulnerable passengers, licensing authorities require an enhanced check to help assess suitability.
What it shows
An enhanced DBS check may show:
- Spent and unspent convictions.
- Cautions, reprimands and warnings.
- Relevant non-conviction information from local police.
The DBS Update Service
Most councils require drivers to register with the DBS Update Service so the check can be kept live and re-checked without a new application each year. There is usually a small annual fee for the Update Service.
Does a conviction mean I cannot get a licence?

Who carries out the check?
